As all of IBN’s customers know, phosphorus is the primary nutrient
responsible for triggering rooted plant and algae growth in your pond.
Although AquaMats®, Microbes, and Aeration all help to reduce available
phosphorus in ponds, this process can be accelerated with our RAP program.
In the RAP program, material is broadcasted across the surface of your
pond and allowed to settle throughout the water column.
Throughout this process, reactive phosphorus is bound up and made
unavailable indefinitely. Once the
material settles on the pond bottom, it also acts to keep nutrients from being
expelled from any muck that may be present.
Fewer nutrients in the water means less algae growth.
As you can readily see there is a major
difference in the water clarity. As you'll read in the article - it is not long
lasting. Remember, you are putting a "lid" on you pond bottom.
Treatment
longevity depends upon the age, depth, and watershed of your pond.
Given these variables, effectiveness can last from 1 to 5 years.
Following treatment, water clarity will improve dramatically-typically in
less than 24 hours. Although the
exceptional clarity will only be short-term, average water clarity will improve
from pre-treatment. However, due to
the binding of phosphorus, the fertility of the pond will be decreased, reducing
the prevalence of problematic algae and some rooted plants.
What ponds are candidates for this treatment?
This program is most appropriate for recreational and water supply ponds
where lower fertility is desired. Ponds
designed for fishing and or fish production should not be treated unless
problematic algae are abundant. It
is important to remember that nutrients are available to your pond externally
(runoff) and internally (recycling). For
any program to be effective, both sources of nutrients must be addressed.
